Indore: Mahakal Temple in Ujjain will go green this festive season with use of herbal colours, made from different flowers by tribal women of Shahdol district in Madhya Pradesh, on the occasion of Holi.Colours made from palash (Butea monosperma), spinach and sindur (vermillion powder) will be used for the first time for worship of Lord Shiva. About 1-1.5 quintals of herbal colours will be delivered to the Mahakal Temple by the cooperative society of women involved in making colours. Priest Pradeep Guru of Mahakal Temple said, "For the first time herbal colours made from natural flowers and herbs will be used for abhishek (worship) of Lord Shiva on March 22.
As per the ritual, application of colour on Lord shiva marks the beginning of Holi festival in Ujjain." "Colours made from chemicals have a lot of harmful effects on the skin and leads to breathing problems. Through this initiative we wanted to spread the message across the country that everyone should avoid chemical and use natural colours," he said.Meanwhile, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) will organise a workshop on methods used for making herbal colours and its uses in Ujjain on March 22. Tribal women involved in making herbal colours will demonstrate the methods of making colours from natural flowers at the workshop.
