Paes, Bopanna beaten, Sania win in US Open

Veteran Indian star Leander Paesand Rohan Bopanna crashed out of the men's doubles competition after losing their respective matches but Sania Mirza made an assured start to her mixed doubles journey at the US Open tennis tournament.

The Indo-German pair of Paes and Andre Begemann gave a tough fight before going down 6-2, 5-7, 4-6 in one hour and 59 minutes in the first round against Stephane Robert of France and Dudi Sela of Israel here on Friday.


Next, Indo-Danish pair of Rohan Bopanna and Frederik Nielsen went down against American Brian Baker and New Zealand's Marcus Daniell 6-2, 7-6 (5).

Canada top Brazil 2-1 to win bronze in women's football

Brazil's women's football team came away empty-handed in Rio Olympics, losing 1-2 to Canada in the bronze-medal match here on Friday.

Deanne Rose, 17, opened the scoring for Canada in the 25th minute and then set up teammate Christine Sinclair for a goal at the 52-minute mark to make the score 2-0 at Arena Corinthians, Efe news reported.


The North Americans' dominance was only interrupted at the 79-minute mark, when Brazilian striker Beatriz broke free of two defenders and got off a shot well out of the reach of goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe.
